Marine Staff Sgt. Stephen L. Murphy's mother, Carol, was among dozens of mourners who came to town square yesterday to pay tribute to the 36-year-old, who was killed Nov. 8 in Al Asad, Iraq. "I was blessed with something wonderful, but it was his time to go," Murphy said at the memorial, hosted by the local American Legion post.

Saying goodbye to a son or daughter deploying overseas can be one of life's most difficult moments, but Richard Jones of Amherst says the staff at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport recently made that moment a little easier for his family.


Friends recall Marine Staff Sgt. Stephen L. Murphy, who died in Iraq on Sunday. According to the Department of Defense, Murphy died "while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom."

A convicted domestic terrorist whose crimes include the bombing of the Seabrook, N.H., post office in July 1976 has been invited by faculty at the University of Massachusetts to give a speech on social change. Raymond Luc Levasseur and his United Freedom Front committed bank robberies and bombings in several East Coast states in the 1970s and 1980s.

UPDATE: BostonHerald.com reported late this afternoon that Levasseur's speech may be blocked by his federal parole officer.


Calling them "thirteen American heroes," Fort Hood commander Lt. Gen. Robert Cone yesterday praised those who died along with those who survived the murderous attack by a lone gunman at the sprawling Texas facility last Thursday.

NH Guard Facebook page eclipses 500 fans


In the past week, 50 people have joined the New Hampshire National Guard's Facebook page (click to view it), swelling its "fan" base to 520. Since it went live in July, the site has averaged more than 100 new fans a month.
