There is no "silver bullet" for McCain in the VP field. The pick should be whoever would do the least harm, is compatable with the top of the ticket, and would have some creds as commander in chief should the need arise. Romney flunks criterion #2, Pawlenty falls short on #3, Ridge passes all three, but has the pro-choice albatross. My choice (assuming he can pass the vetting process)? Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC.

Gotta give it to the Israel Lobby, they never quit, always demand more, hide their weaknesses and hold the huge trump card: money. McCain has to genuflect at their altar or be devoured by them.

I believe McCain should be bold and either go with Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson, in an attempt to take advantage of disgruntled women democrats, or with former Michigan Governor John Engler, a pro-life Catholic, as a slap against Joe Biden (and John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi...).
Either pick would energize the conservative base. One would deliver more women voters across the nation. The other could tip a large swing state from blue to red.
There is no downside to either choice. Every other name mentioned comes with at least some baggage.
McCain is ahead. He needs a strong finish, and shouldn't risk losing ground with a controversial pick for VP.
