Joseph W. McQuaid: For Manchester, Gatsas and spending cap

Reader comments

Tomorrow is an important day for Manchester. The election will not only determine the direction the city takes for the next two years; it will finally allow the voters a direct say in how much of their money the politicians can tax and spend away.

Although they tried to hide behind some nice-sounding front names, it is now clear that the organized and funded opposition to the spending cap comes from unions, particularly the education union, and other liberal groups, some of them not even from New Hampshire.

Don't be fooled. This isn't about the quality of education or the ability to govern. Other New Hampshire cities and towns have such caps and function quite well. The unions are dreadfully afraid that anything that puts the brakes on government spending will affect their raises.

Also important tomorrow is the election of a new mayor. It is telling that candidate Ted Gatsas has no problem with the spending cap and in fact has embraced it as part of his program. Meanwhile, candidate Mark Roy is dead set against limiting spending and has been, surprise!, endorsed by the teachers' union.

Taxpayers, those interested in orderly growth and low spending, will do themselves and their city's future a favor by voting for Ted Gatsas and for the spending cap.

@Barbara Wesolowski, Manchester, NH: I think I know a little bit about what you are saying. Why not tell your wacky Governor and Chairman Lyons to stop buying programs from snake-oil education industry 'consultants' whose recommendations end up with the adminstration forcing you teachers to use these wacky fad programs and instead, let you have the money for your classroom supplies and let you teach using tried and true methods instead of all this collectivist BS they are pushing on the kids to make them 'global citizens'? Huh? How about that??? Then you could save money AND the NH kids wouldn't be failing math!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please, do not use the excuse that the kids can't learn if you have a spending cap. THERE IS NO CORRELATION between money spent and how well kids learn! It's a fact!!!!!!!!!
- Sue, Manchester

Joco, you must be joking? We need to raise taxes higher than the rate of inflation every year to prevent Manchester from plummeting downhill?? High taxes support the community??? Thats your argument???
- Jim, Manchester

Nice try, Eric (no last name) from Manchester, but claiming that we'll get our bond rating downgraded is a total red-herring.

Say what you will about bond-rating agencies, but do you really think that they'd down-grade a city that _makes it more difficult_ for their elected leaders to over-spend?

Any references for this claim?
- Alec Muller, Manchester

please elect Mr. Roy and vote No on the silly spending cap. Our schools and infrastructure are failing after many years of cutting, its time to spend some money. You get what you pay for and we have a failing government.......
- Scott Hartford, manchester

I cannot believe that this editor lives in the city and supports the tax cap. His kids must be out of the public school system.
Oh wait. They are.
I am so disappointed that he lacks the ability to be supportive of his community. A tax cap, long term, does not support a community.
Afraid this city will continue to go downhill - a tax cap will send it plummeting.
- joco, manchester, NH

What is conveniently left out is how utterly impossible it is to govern with a spending cap and a spending cap causes a terrible bond rating for any city or town.
- Eric, Manchester, NH

Well said Louis. There will never be enough money. That is why the charter ammendment must pass. if you force the government to work with a budget you create a climate of fiscal responsibility. you don't forgo schools and public safety, you cut back on elective services to keep the funding where it needs to be. This bill and Ted Gatsas are the best thing that can happen to Manchester in this rotten economy.
- Tom Croteau, Manchester

"vote yes to say no more" to greedy city worker raises when we are hurting! cowardly politicians can't say no, so we have to. vote yes to the tax cap!
- johanne, manchester

Call your family, friends and neighbors and encourage them to vote this Tuesday and yes DRIVE them if need be. A vote for Mark Roy represents someone who will earn the right to be in office. Ted is a great guy but unfortunately represents a part of the "Good ole boy/gal" network that has given us the same bag each term. It is time to vote for someone who represents the "voiceless working poor" in Manchester. This Tuesday Vote Mark Roy for Mayor
- Ernesto Pinder, Manchester

Up top now I was voting for Ted Gatsas because he supports a tax cap however I made simple request to him and he failed miserably to keep his promise and he is not yet Mayor. He totally ignored the request that I made to him personally will he do the same if he is elected Mayor? As for Mark Roy I would never vote for him he is supported by the anti-tax cap corrupt unions like the firefighters and the MEA and the like they are hiding their identities because they are so unpopular with the taxpayers of this city. At this stage I might just leave the bloc on my ballot for Mayor blank. Or vote for deceased Mayor.
- Richard L. Fortin, Manchester

I find it ironic that Mr. McQuaid can put an editorial on the front page, pretend that it is news, and accuse unions of being self-serving. I am not alone when I say I am not worried about my raises should the tax cap pass. Come walk in my shoes for a day Mr. McQuaid and Sen. Gatsas, meet the needs of my 27 students. Maybe you can bring along some much needed supplies. When was the last time you had
to buy your own supplies to do your job?
- Barbara Wesolowski, Manchester, NH

I encourage Manchester citizens to vote Mark E. Roy for mayor. Mark E. Roy has been serving Manchester for many years and he would make an absolutely great mayor. Throughout his career, he has been fighting for advancment in oublic education as well as promoting the safety measures taken within schools. As a father himself, he has a great concern for the facilities in schools around Manchester and New Hampshire. He was vice chairman of the Citizens Task Force, a group that has advocated for improvemane in our public schools.

Throughout his career, Mark has always considered the future generations and has shown great fiscal responsibility. Mark E. Roy has always shown fiscal responsibility by considering the people before he makes a decision. He has always advocated for a fair tax system that doesn't hurt the middle class.

In order for Mark to continue his great work on education and fiscal responsibility. He needs a Democratic school board that will be willing to work together. so please, vote Democratic on Nov. 3rd.
- Douglas Marino, Newfields, NH

The AFL-CIO was making phone calls yesterday telling people to vote for Mark Roy and the democrat alderman candidate was and to vote no on the spending cap.

This is ALL about UNIONS and what will be good for them not what will be good for Manchester. Vote yes on the spending cap.
- Ben, Manchester

Remember, if you want to keep your home, there's no garuntee that we will get fiscally conservative prudent people in office, vote YES on the cap.

If they are really in dire need they will have the ability to override it, but at least taken for face value it will try to hold spending in check.

Just remember the ones that are fighting against it are the ones with the most to gain out of saying no, special interest groups, union activists, and city employees. They may be city residents too, they may pay taxes too, but what they are paying is nowhere what they are getting in return.

So vote YES on November 3rd if you want to keep your home and don't let fear and intimidation tell you otherwise.
This is your voice. Please also vote for Teddy, he will do a great job for the city and watch out for irresponsible spending.
- Jack Alex, Manchester

the more you give city officials, the more they will spend! 9% sales tax, plus state income tax and California needs more money for schools ect. Hope Ted gets elected.
